Naturally Heal Common Ailments With Manuka Honey

A friend recently turned me on to Manuka Honey and I am oh-so-glad she did!  Funny how things work out… about 2 days after she told me about it, one of my kiddos came down with a sore throat and cold.  Off to Mother’s Market I went to get some Manuka Honey.

Manuka Honey is amazing!  Use it if you have a sore throat, cough, cold, even gastro-intestinal disorders such as acid reflux, upset stomach, stomach ulcers, peptic ulcer,  irritable bowel syndrome, and heartburn to name a few.  It can also be used on your skin for cuts, burns, acne and more!

From the research I’ve done, I’ve found that you need to buy Organic Manuka Honey that says, “16+” or higher.  The higher the number, the more potent.  Anything less is not going to have as efficient health benefits.  Just take 1/2 – 1 tsp. several times throughout the day if you’re sick or once a day to maintain health!   As a mom who wants to provide the best possible, natural, care to my children, I can honestly say that I felt like this helped my son get better quicker.  I like to avoid the Dr. as much as possible because I know they’ll just push antibiotics that I know our bodies don’t necessarily need 😉

The reason I chose Wedderspoon Raw Organic Manuka Honey:

North America’s number One Organically Certified Manuka Honey suppliers.  Their authentic, manuka honey is recognized throughout North America for its outstanding quality and consistency. Manuka Honey is know all over the world for its extraordinarily powerful healing benefits At Wedderspoon Organic, we bring you the finest in organic products because we know quality matters. We proudly support the OMA Mark (Organic Manuka Active) Chemical and Pesticide Free honey Antibiotic and GMO Free honey. Never feeding the bees sugar. Hives are made from environmentally friendly material. Each jar is traceable back to master beekeeper Area of forage is 5km from intensive farming. Activity in our honeys has been reached naturally & has not been increased by man.

I bought mine at Mother’s Market.  It is also available on Amazon and I’m sure other health food stores carry it.  I paid about $35 and that’s the price on Amazon.  I would imagine you don’t really want “cheap” Manuka Honey… you’ll be getting what you pay for!  It’s a decent size jar that will last us a long time!

Do you use Manuka Honey?  What ailments has it helped you with?

30 Days to a Healthier You, Day 25: Make it Yourself!

Do you love to eat out?  I mean, who doesn’t right?  It’s so nice to take a break from the kitchen and eat some delicious food.  But, the fact is, it’s kind of scary to think of what ingredients they just might be using.  Where do they get their meat?  Or is it really meat 🙁  Or how many calories are loaded into the sauce they’re throwing on?  Is ANY of it organic?  You really won’t know, unless it’s a completely organic restaurant.

Making your favorite “restaurant” foods at home can save you money, calories, and Lord knows what else!  Even if you’re craving a greasy cheeseburger and fries, preparing it at home can make a world of difference.  You can make your own buns, or buy some high quality whole grain buns.  Use grass fed beef {which tastes better anyways}, organic veggies, and bake your fries.  Not only will you be cutting your calories, you’ll know what’s going into your meal.

Whatever it is that’s your favorite guilty pleasure when you eat out, you can make it at home better.  So instead of cutting out your favorite completely, try it yourself!

30 Days to a Healhtier You, Day 16: Farmers Markets

In our quest to become healthier, we’ve talked about the benefits of eating organic.  This can become a little expensive {which is why I started this blog!} and may cause us to want to jump off of the wagon and give it up.  Don’t give up!  It’s going to save you hundreds of dollars in the future.  You won’t be buying medications to numb the pain of diseases.  An excellent way to alleviate the cost of buying organic is to shop farmers markets.

Farmers markets are a great source of local organic produce.  You are buying directly from the farmer so you can ask questions and know exactly where and how your produce was grown.   You are also cutting out the middle man, which is going to save you money.

There are a couple of things to consider when shopping at Farmers Markets.  Going at the beginning ensures the best pick.  Although, you probably won’t be able to negotiate prices as well.  Going at the end allows you to bargain shop because the farmers want to sell everything!  If it’s your first visit to a particular market, you may want to walk through and check prices before buying anything.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve bought something and then 2 booths down found it cheaper!  Once you’ve been to the same one a few times, you’ll know who you like to buy from and their prices.  Also, be sure to bring your own bags or a basket to carry all of your lovely finds.

I highly encourage you to check out your local farmers markets.  If you’re in California, you can check for your location here.  If you live in another state simply do an online search for local Farmer’s Markets in your area.  You will love eating locally grown produce and helping farmers in your community!

Where’s your favorite farmers market?  And what are your best finds?

30 Days to a Healthier You, Day 12: Vitamins

We’ve all been told time and time again to take our vitamins.   And we all know that vitamins help fight disease and keep our bodies at optimum health. But are we really getting what we’re supposed to?  Many of the multivitamins and one-a-days that are out there don’t even provide all of the vitamins and minerals that we actually need.  Did you know that the recommended amount of vitamin C, determined by the FDA, is only enough to keep you from getting scurvy?  Their recommendations haven’t been updated in years!

To help get all of the vitamins and minerals that we need, we should be taking vitamins made from whole, complete foods.  Most of what you find at the store are only partial or isolated vitamins.  Your body will only absorb a very small amount of these.  When you’re taking a vitamin made from whole vitamins and foods, it all works together to give your body exactly what it needs.  Who wants to waste their money on vitamins that don’t even benefit you in any way?

So, the next time you tell your kids to take their vitamins, be sure your giving them {and yourself} something worth taking.  Do your research, spend a little extra money on high quality, organic, whole food vitamins.  It will pay off in the long run!

Why I Love Sprouts: I Can Feed My Family Healthy Food on a Budget!

I just got back from a great shopping trip at Sprouts.  I had to share in hopes of giving you some encouragement.  It seems that people are always saying, “I can’t afford to feed my family a healthy diet on a budget.”  I beg to differ!  Even if you don’t have a Sprouts, it can be done {more on that in a bit}.  There are so many good deals on produce, dairy, and meat products at Sprouts!  I printed my handy dandy list {found in any of Domestic Frugalista’s store matchups} and headed off to Sprouts.  I actually only had 1 coupon in hand and still saved a bundle!

I got everything in the pictures above for $100!!  That’s enough food for my family for this week.  Pounds and pounds of produce, 8-10 pounds of pork and poultry, milk, eggs, etc, etc… for $100!  Now, there are a few things I already have on hand, but some of these items will last into next week too.  There are even a few splurges like strawberries, pineapple, lunch meat, cheese, and bacon!  These are things that I normally don’t buy, but they were priced low and I was saving so much already!

One of my best saving tips is to plan your menu around what you have in your pantry and the produce and meat that’s on sale.  If I go to the store with only one type of produce in mind, and find that it’s sky high in price, I would be a fool to buy it!  Why buy 1 pound of  something when you can get 2 pounds of something else for the same price?  When meat is on sale at a rock bottom price, I stock up and freeze it.  If my stock pile is depleted {or if you’re just starting out} I buy whatever is priced the best that week.  No need to ask the hubby or kiddos what they want, they’re getting whats on sale 😉

Now, some of you may be saying to yourselves, “I don’t have a Sprouts, so I can’t get these great deals.”  You can find deals anywhere!  I used to only have a Safeway.  In my opinion, they are typically higher priced than most grocery stores.  But, I used the same strategy there as I do at Sprouts.  Buy what’s on sale and stock up when it’s rock bottom.  You can also look for Farmer’s Market’s in your area.  They typically have lower prices and the produce is a lot higher quality since it hasn’t been traveling in truck for 2 weeks!  If you still feel like you can’t find as good of deals, maybe it’s time to really look through your sales ads.  You may find that there’s a grocery store you don’t frequent with lower prices than where you go now.  It’s worth the time and effort to know that you are getting the most for your money!

How do you save money while sticking to a healthy lifestyle?
